Objective
Description:
Objectives:The objective of the project is the thorough study and the full exploitation of a new X-ray imaging technique, named "Diffraction Enhanced Imaging" which allows low absorbing details embedded in a similar environment to be imaged with an extraordinary high sensitivity. This technique is based on the observation of phase shift effects produced by the spatial variations of the X-ray refractive index: scattering in the micro-radian range occurs, which is provided by a sufficient spatial coherence of the source. The system, which is needed consists of a suitable X-ray beam-line, an analyzer crystal and a high quality, photon sensitive detector and will be called "Phase Analyzer System". An analyzer crystal effectively selects various scattering angles and transforms it into measurable intensities onto an image receptor. This results in a tremendously improved image quality at constant dose, or a substantial reduction of dose for the same image quality. The basic strategy of the project is twofold: on the one hand a design study for a synchrotron based PHASY is planned, which will increase the access to Europe's pool of research infrastructures. On the other hand a technology transfer is performed which will be manifested in the design study of a x-ray tube based system.
Results:
During the first reporting period the four phase analyzer systems were installed at the participating infrastructures and first measurements on biological samples were performed.
