Volume photoemission from solids with synchroton radiation

Objective

The aim of the VOLPE project is to develop a novel instrument able of measuring the volume vs. surface electronic properties of solids by the Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PE) with Synchrotron Radiation. The needed Analyser’s characteristics are summarized as follows: Kinetic Energy Range up to 10 kV, stability of HV power supply between 5-10 meV at 5-10 keV, a dark count rate in the range of 10-1 counts/sec, an energy resolution of 20-40 meV at highest kinetic energy (6-8 keV). These conditions are obtainable only by exploiting a prototype analyser at new generation Synchrotron Radiation facilities like ESRF and ELETTRA. The results of pilot experiments performed at ESRF, and the subsequent implementation of new technologies and techniques will make possible to develop a European research activity dedicated to bulk PE.
