Science and technology week on the impact of science on the sustainable development of the leather industry

Objective

There are 3000 tanneries in Europe, employing 50,000 people, often located in special areas with large concentrations of SMEs. Their major problem is their image. They are considered as low-tech and polluting. However, new production technologies have been developed, changing the production processes significantly. EU tanners are now using modern technologies, reducing the environmental impact and improving the working environment considerably. This proposal aims to raise public awareness for science & innovation in tanneries and thereby bridge the gap between the public and the leather industry, and between sciences in general in its European dimension and the public. European citizens (e.g. those living close to clusters) will better understand the beneficial impact of research and technological development in tanneries for the environment.
