Economic and political re-integration in an enlarged eu: implications for regional stability

Objective

We will address the consequences of the accession of central and eastern European countries (CEEC) to the EU through trade, labour and capital mobility on the CEEC, EU and non-accession states of South East Europe. We will consider the political economy of the accession and the strategies that could be employed to successfully widen the EU.
Our analysis will be a mixture of trade modelling, game theory, institutional, policy and data analyses, and case studies. We will pay attention to lessons from the failure of previous integration schemes involving the CEEC (such as CMEA). The outcomes will be an understanding of the economic consequences of the accession, on the EU, the accession CEEC and neighbouring non-accession states, and the institutional reforms and policies required to build a wider stable EU.
