Orientations of young men and women to citizenship and european identity

Objective

The proposal is a multi-site investigation of youth and forms of identity and citizenship among young men and women in strategically selected nations and regions. The selected sites are cities and regions with contrasting cultural alignments for or against European identity and contrasting historical investments in nation-based and ethnicity-based citizenship. Analysis includes the effects of gender and career path on forms of citizenship and identity. Key foci are the interrelations of personal, local, regional and national identities and how they impede or encourage the development of particular forms of European citizenship identity. Attention will be paid to orientations to civic participation, ethnic division and tolerance of diversity, and notions of inclusion and exclusion.
