Objective
We propose to establish a European Civil Society Network (Coronet) which stimuli- lattés cross-disciplinary and transactional research on the emergence, dynamics and perspectives of a European-wide civil society. The preparatory studies in 2003 and 2004 will primarily deal with the concept of "civil society" in historical and comparative perspectives; with the social base of civil society and the public sphere in Europe; with civil society and governance; and with civil society and the economy. On this basis a "Network of Excellence" will be proposed later, within the 6th Framework Programme of the EU. Social scientists from different disciplines and from 10 institutions in 15 European countries will be involved. Emphasis is put on the study of transactional processes. The network will produce results relevant for the discussion of practical problems, the goals and the value basis of the European Union on its way of extension and further integration.
