Objective
Recommissioning of the Biebermuehle hydro power station at the Zwickauer Mulde river in 09322 Amerika, Saxonia, FRG through rehabilitation of the Kaplan siphon turbine and modernization of the control and electrical system.
The Biebermuehle hydro power plant is a diversion-type run-of-river plant and utilizes the seasonally fluctuating discharges of the Zwickauer Mulde river. The Zwickauer Mulde is retained at the tapping point by a weir with two spans, consisting of an electrically operated fishbellied flap and a wooden panel structure. The works water for the turbine reaches the power house and the turbine through a headrace approximately 100 m long. The power house, built in 1937, consists of rubble stone mansonry. The turbine is to be rehabilitated by a renowned European turbine manufacture by reworking the existing Kaplan runner (built in 1937), improving runner geometry and equipping with state-of-the-art accessory equipment. Rehabilitation will comprise the installation of an advanced electronic/hydraulic control system with SPC and optimizing control for the runner/guide vane relationship at varying heads for optimizing the turbine's efficiency. Safety and life of runner and guide vanes are substantially increased by using water lubrication bearing technology and advanced materials. Specifications: h=2.94 m, Q=17.9 m3/s, PA=400 kW. The electricity generated will be completely fed into the national grid. The average energy production costs, (I x A+M) / Q are calculated to 0.126 ECU/kWh.
