TO DEMONSTRATE A CONTROL SYSTEM USING A FIBRE OPTIC LINK TO REGULATE THE REMOTE LAKE RESERVOIRS

Objetivo

a) The aim is to demonstrate a control system using a fibre optic link to regulate remote lake reservoirs.
b) To develop a management programme to optimise water storage and usage to enable maximum economic returns from the electricity power utility tariff system.
c) To use chemical agents ("Levasint") on penstocks to reduce head losses.

The project is a high head Hydro electric scheme in a remote upland catchment area of Country Mayo, which is in the West of Ireland.
The project will harness the storage capacity of three remote lake reservoirs to give a total retained storage of 910 x 1000 x m3. This gives the equivalent of 23 days fuel running capacity. The lakes will be controlled by the construction of embankment at the lake outlets, they will discharge through a remote control valve system. The embankment will be constructed of gabions made from local store will an impermeable membrane running through it.
The intake is located 300M downstream of Lough Nadrickmore and the pond will cover the lag time storage between the lake and intake. The structure will be concrete. The penstock is 500 mm in diameter and will be buried for its entire length. It will be coated with and environmentally compatible thermoplastic powder.
The penstock transfers the water from the lake to the turbine. The turbine will be a four jetpelton set directly coupled to an asynchronous generator. The turbine/generator will be controlled by an upstream level control system, which ensures that the turbine always accepts as much water as is currently available (up to its rated capacity) and hence maximises the power output according to the available flow.
The fibre optic link will control the discharges from the lakes. The discharge from the lakes fluctuates between wide limits. The immediate run off from this type of catchment after rainfall is approximately 80%. The storage provided by the lake reservoirs can provide a steady discharge when a purpose built Management Supervisory control is employed. The supervisory and load management computer will be based in the powerhouse control room. It will provide control and data acquisition towards operating the turbine/ generator as efficiently as possible with a minimal staffing.
