Objective
The water fall of "Farebout" is an old paper mill, built on the Vienne river in the center of France near the city of Limoges. Some old documents prove that this installation was already in function in 1506. The industrial activities were completely stopped in 1994. The existing structures consist principally in an low head dam (height 1.54 m) followed by another smaller one, the height of which is 0,85 m. The total gross head is therefore 2.39 m. The average annuel flow is approximately 20.3 m3/s and the length of the river between the intake and the end of the tail race channel is 330 m. Some of the old francis turbines installed in 1895 are still in place and the maximum installed output was around 160 kW. The total surface of the old factory is 49000 m2 with a constructed surface of 3600 m2.
The contractors plan to refurbish completely this site by removing all the old existing turbines and civil works structures and installing new equipment in place of the old one. They will produce electrical energy and sale it the EDF grid.
The project leader has a long and strong experience in hydraulic power plants and has recently developed, with subsidies of "ADEME", a system using a water turbine to inject air in the turbined water ("Turbo project"). A small prototype as been built and tested. The results show that an appreciable increase of oxygen percentage could be achieved. The idea, with this new project, is to continue this development but on an industrial scale in order to demonstrate the possibilities of this system for existing and new hydraulic power stations.
The opportunities of such application are evident : it will contribute to improve the quality of the water downstream the plant and , as a consequence, will help strongly the promoter to obtain legal authorisations.
Two new axial flow inclined turbines with a runner diameter of 2 m (12 m2/s each) will be installed with their belt speed increasers and asynchronous generators. The mechanical output per unit will be 210 kW and they will produce around 1700.000 kW per year. On each turbine will be installed a special device able to inject air through the draft tube just after the cunner. The quantity of air will be piloted by a computer. With the new installation, all the civil works of the plant will be renewed and a fish ladder will be built with a boat ladder.
