RINO MINI-HYDROELECTRIC SCHEME IN ADAMELLO PARK

Objective

The aim of the project is the realization of a mini hydroelectric plant that will be able to exploit the renewable energetic resources available in an environment of relevant value inside the regional "Park of Adamello", with the approval of local economic (both tourist and agricultural) operators and environmental authorities. The expected result is the production of about 13 GWh by the exploitation of a renewable energy source located inside a regional park, an increase in the tourist attraction of the valley as well and a 0,090 m3/s supply of regulated water to a mountain irrigation scheme.
The produced energy will increase the competitivity in national and international market of the textile production, that operates in very difficult conditions due to the mountain location of the establishments. All the requirements, concerning the respect, the reduction of the impact and the fitting for such an environment have been carefully considered at every design moment.
The cost and the duration of the project are about the same as the scheduled ones, except some little change compensated within the different phases.
In the monitoring phase of six winter months the electric production has been the 21% more than the expected ones; on annual basis the energy production will be 14 GWh, that means an increase of about 7%
Just from the beginning of the operation time, the Rino plant was supplying desilted water to an existing sprinkler irrigation plant, without causing problems nor to the hydroelectric operation nor to the irrigation ones.
referring to the tourist attraction, the local authorities and people seem enjoy a lot the recreation area created near the basin.
So we can say that the project completely matches its foreseen goals.
The project involves a hydro plant designed to exploit the existing potential in an area of particular environmental sensitivity, a natural park, and it is located in a mountain irrigation scheme and in a tourist development scheme. The whole plant scheme and the single equipment parts have been carefully designed in order to exploit the energetic, tourist and agricultural resources at their best, with negligible environmental impact, by means of special technical solutions more expensive than conventional ones: interred penstock, very low noise emissions, multi purposes utilization of the intake basin (suitable to hydroelectric, tourist and environmentals aims).
The Rino plant exploits the Remulo River from "Faet" bridge to the Rino built-up area. A subchannel "trap" intake will be located just upstream the Faet bridge. The crest of the diversion device will be at 1.126 m above sea level. The diverted flows will enter in an intake basin about 12.000 m3 capacity. It will be supplied with emergency drop spillway and desilting slide gate. Its walls and mat will be made of reinforced concrete. It will be accessible by vehicles by means of a chute so that will it be possible to remove slime deposit. All the walls will be coated by local natural stone. An area completed with tables and benches will be realized to allow tourist fruition upstream to the basin. The valves chamber from which begins the penstock will be built at the end of the basin. Low pressure part of the penstock, 1,8 km long, will be completely interred and made of polyester resin fiberglass reinforced (PRFV). Steel penstock, 1 km long, will constitute the high pressure part. The penstock ends in the powerhouse, 680 m above sea level. Two Pelton turbine-synchronous generator units will be installed here. The power house will rise in a flat accessible from an existing road on the left riverside. The control and operation panels will be settled in the power house. The tranformers will be locatedon the outside, in a shielded area close to the powerhouse. The position both of the power house and of the tailrace are designed to supply a mountain irrigation scheme under realization by Sonico municipality. Effective catchment area will be 18 km2 and average flow rate exploitable for hydroelectric purpose will be 0,415 m3/s, with a massimum flow rate of 0,780 m3/s. Available net head will be 426 m. Energy production by this renewable energy resource will be about 13 GWh/year.
