Objective
The aim of this project is to use water from the San Anton Reservoir, which suplies drinking water to the municipalities which from the Water Supply Association of Txingudi, i.e. IRUN and HONDARRIBIA, for the generation of hydroelectric power.
Initially, it is planned to transport the electricity generated to the network of the Electricity Company in question. Later, a study will be made of the possibilities of taking advantage of this energy for the consumption of the Purifying Station itself, and surplus energy, if any, would be taken to the network of the Electricity Company.
The consumption of water by the above mentioned association will, during the 1st stage, be 400 l/sec, with a gradual increase up to 600 l/sec being envisaged. As a consequence of this, the equipment has been designed in consideration of future demand, i.e. the installation will be designed so that during the 2nd stage, with 600 l/sec, only the 2nd hydraulic turbine will be installed.
The production during the first year of operation has been of 1.781.640 kWh. During this period of time, work has been directed towards the start-up and optimization of the mini power station. Additionally, the construction of the water treatment has been monitored, though this is not the subject of this project.
A 450 kW hydroelectric power station has been constructed at the end of a 7500 m long pressurized pipe line with an interior diameter of 600 mm.
The water to drive the turbine comes from the San Anton reservoir (5.1 Hm3), and the power station is situated prior to the drinking water treatment plant.
The power station installation has been equipped with the following :
- A monitoring and control system. Both water level and flow are controlled. An ultrasonic flow meter has been incorporated downstream from the turbine for instantaneous flow control.
- A pressure equalizing valve. An equalizing valve has been incorporated upstream from the turbine to eliminate excess pressure and avoid possible water hammering caused by the 7000 m long pressurized pipe line.
- A by-pass valve. A NEYRPIC breakage valve has been installed.
- Materials. The turbine wheel is of chrome-nickel molded steel (G-X5Cr Ni 13.4).
