Objective
i) To install and operate a hydro-electric generation system utilising a high performance coating system.
ii) To gain knowledge of the problems inherent in designing, constructing and operating a hydro-electric scheme with the high performance coating system.
iii) To disseminate, as widely as possible, the knowledge gained from the project to enable further practical development and implementation of hydro-electric schemes throughout the Community, utilising the high performance coating system.
Principally this is an innovation project where a specialist coating will be applied to the internal components of the water turbine. A similar coating based on glass platelets in a resin matrix has been successfully applied to a range of water supply and sewage pumps to increase their efficiencies above that of new pumps and maintain those efficiencies by the prevention of corrosion and/or erosion. The coating that will be developed for this project will be based on this technology, but specifically designed for the operating characteristics and dimensions of the water turbine. It will involve the installation, test commission and report of a standard Hydro-Turbine. This will be followed by a strip down, inspection, application of the specialist coatings re-installation, test, commission and report on the improved efficiencies achieved using this type of technology in the area of small scale hydro-electric schemes.
