INSTALLATION OF A PROPELLER AXIAL FLOW TURBINE IN THE INTAKE OF A WATER TREATMENT PLANT

Objectif

Proposal to instal a propeller axial flow turbine with integrated bevel gear in the intake works of an operational water treatment plant. The existing intake works consist of 6 km, in diameter supply pipe drawing water from a reservoir.
The turbine is designed to be of fixed guide vane variable blade configuration with pitch adjustment by a hydraulically actuated governor. The expected annual energy output is 700,000 kWh and the estimated payback is 4 years.
Unsuccesfull project.
The Broadside Water Treatment Works is supplied through a 1 m diameter, 10 km pipeline from a supply reservoir. The pipeline delivers a flow of 1 to 1.25 m3/s at a net head of between 10 and 15 m. The turbine will dissipate the energy instead of wasting the energy at a Break Pressure Tank. The 120 kW of power will be used partly to supply the Treatment Works, the remainder being sold to the grid.
The turbine will be a novel, in-line propellor turbine with a bevel gear connecting to a synchronous generator. Connection to the grid will be made at 415 V.
