A NOVEL BEVEL-GEARED, KAPLAN TURBINE FOR SMALL HYDRO ELECTRIC GENERATOR

Objective

To replace an obsolete water wheel with an economically viable modem unit comprising a double-controlled, bevel gear, Kaplan turbine.
The unit was commissioned in January 1986 and recorded a total output of 694,000 kWh in the first year at a load factor of 76%, which is an increase of 54 % over the estimated value. The output was reduced by excessive leaves fouling the turbine blades.
This problem is the subject of continued work by the contractor and the manufacturer.
The installation to be replaced had the following features
- head 2. 8 m
- blow 3. 6 m3/s
- output 30 kW
The original water wheel is replaced by a double-controlled, bevel -gear, Kaplan turbine whose flat efficiency verses flow characteristic allows the scheme to be upgraded. The new installation has the following features,
- head 3. 43 m
- blow 3. 6 m3/s
- output 105 kW
- turbine speed 277 rev/min
- generator speed 760 rev/min
The head was increased by lowering the canal bed. All electricity generated is used privately by the contractor.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
