Objective
It is intended to modify small Kaplan tube turbines for harnessing reserve flows released from water supply reservoirs. Modification consists of a vertical shafted arrangement of the runner, variable blades and water lubricated bearings. The application range comprises heads from 10 to 20 m and flows of up to 3 cums. The demo project is foreseen to be built on the outlet of an existing reservoir supply tunnel with following data : net head = 14.8 m, design discharge = 3 cums, maximum electricity capacity = 340 kW.
Electricity produced by means of an asyncron generator and fed to the public grid (EDF). Good application potential in EC and developing countries.
In spite of incidents occurred during 1990 on the gates, and which did not affect the innovative part of the project, the operation was a success.
The small hydro was installed on an existing Canal de Provence structure the Bimart dam (13.2 Mm3).
A tunnel provides an artificial supply of water in this dam. The project consisted in installing an electricity generator unit in an existing shaft situated at the tunnel outlet.
This project includes :
- A vertical axis Kaplan turbine with adjustable blades (operating range between 1.5 to 3.0 m2/s - Net head 14.3 m - Maximum power 360 kW).
- Two rollers gates under housing positioned upstream and downstream of the turbine (size : 1.1 x 1.1. m).
- One roller gate under housing installed in parallel with the turbine (size 1.8 x 1.8 m).
- An induction generator (P = 400 kW - V = 220/380 V)
- A setup transformer (380 V/20 KV of 500 KVA)
- A programmable controller which executes the control and instrumentation functions for the small hydro plant.
