LOW HEAD LARGE FLOW RUN-OF-RIVER SCHEME IN AN IRRIGATION CHANNEL

Objective

Proposal to harness an existing and unused drop in an irrigation channel by a small hydro plant with three S-tube turbines coupled via gearboxes with asynchronous generators for interconnected operation with the public grid. Technical data: net head: 3.0 m; rated flow: 3 x 25 cms; plant capacity: 3 x 623 = 1869 kW; expected annual energy output: 11.5 GWh. Operation of plant is to be fully automized and remote controlled. Plant also provided with a failure diagnostic system and a detection device for water pollution.

The hydraulic equipment for this project belongs to a family of machines specifically studied for the exploitation of minor hydroelectric resources in connection with two fundamental requirements: a good exploitation of the energetic resource and a short term profitability.
From the technical standpoint this involved a vast amount of research on both hydraulic and construction sides.
On the basis of these requirements, Hydroart has carried out a study which has resulted into the designing of the machines submitted for this application.
Some examples of the work carried out: simplified geometry of the active parts in order to utilise simplified steel plates and machining processes; reduction of the component number: reduction of welded joints. In the hydraulic field, the study of the vortexes in the feeding channels of propeller type machines similar to the ones in question, and a lot more.
Hydroart has always been very sensitive to the problems of environmental safeguard and thisproposal is a proof of such an attitude.
For the feasibility study of this project on the Muzza Channel, Sistemi di Energia has carried out some analyses and appraisals along all the Muzza channel in order to recover an energetic potential presently unexploited, to the advantage of local users, public institutions, agricultural and industrial enterprises, land reclamation consortia and local organisations, who will all benefit from the production of energy.
The proposed project is going to be demonstrative, as Sistemi di Energia has made feasibility studies for three more similar plants on the same channel.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
