Objective
Recovery of energy from a water supply conduit in an irrigation network. Replacement of an existing dissipator by a small hydroelectric plant. Exceptional conditions of installation ( downstream back pressure, very long upstream and downstream conduits).
This small hydroelectric plant is installed on a 29 km long water supply conduit capable of transporting a maximum flow of between 1. 7 and 2. 8cums. A 120000 m3 buffer reservoir has been constructed on the supply 17 km from the head. It is planned to install the small hydroelectric plant upstream from this reservoir in the building housing the various hydraulic control equipment on the water circuits.
Turbine characteristics are as follows :
Flow : 0. 8 cums
Head : 39 to 42 m
Power : 269 kW.
The machine is designed to operate between a 17km headwater channel and 0. 6 km tailwater channel and with a 15 m head back pressure. A vertical axis Francis simplified turbine will be used, no distributor but flow controled by sleeve valve. It will be installed on an existing conduit. Some civil works will be required for the shaft and connections. The current will be transmitted to the national grid after the voltage has been raised to 380/20 kV through a power transformer. Productionof 1 680 000 kWh per year. The sales of electricity to the grid are expected to generate revenues giving a simple payback on the initial investment of about 4. 4 years.
