2 5 MW, ECOLOGICALLY COMPATIBLE, INNOVATIVE HYDROELECTRIC POWERPLANT

Objective

The project aims at exploiting the natural water resources of river Krathis at Tsivlos (north Peloponessos-Greece) utilizing two compact built, special design, vertical axis, francis spiral cover turbines over a 105 m gross head and total maximum discharge of 3.15 m3/s. The plant's installed capacity is 2.7 MW, expecting to produce on an average basis 11.500.000 kWh/annum via grid connected, asynchronous generators, selling its yield to the Public Power Corporation. The plant's operation is fully automated and it involves no dam-reservoir system, thus minimising any environmental impacts.

The installation involves no dam reservoir system. Flows in the range of 0.6 m3/s to 3.15 m3/s are captured by a Tyrolean weir intake arrangement and are diverted through a sink water trap for sand collection to the water transportation system. This consists of an orthogonal, concrete lined open channel where lateral ground slopes allow it and low pressure steel pipe where necessary due to steep grades, leading the flow to the steel, high pressure penstock. Two special design, francis-spiral turbines of 1.5 m3/sec - 102 m net head nominal operation point and power capacity of 2 x 1350 kW are housed in a 17.5 m x 8.5 m power house, 4 m above the river basin. The hydraulic turbines are compact built with straight, conical suction tubes, coupled to as many asynchronous 380 V/50Hz generators (2x1530 kVA), exploiting the available head. The design minimises space requirements and provides for a simple assembly. Each unit is equiped with replacable protection plates for the turbine covers and wearing rings for the runner, maintenance free labyrinth type seals, special wicket gate rupture protection mechanism and adjustable ventilation in the draft tube bend for preventing partial load turbulencies. The hydraulic power packs controlling the equipment automatically utilise entirely biologically decomposable special hydraulic oil for preventing environmental impacts, while the design of the bearings' lubrication system excludes the possibility of water contamination in possible accidents.
A long term average production of 11.500.000 kWh/year is expected. Power is stepped up by a 3150 kVA, 0.4/20 kV transformer and is transmitted by an overhead power line to the PPC local grid where it will be sold according to Greek law 2244/94. The plant's operation is fully automated, incorporating a number of electric, mechanical and hydraulic safety devices allowing safe, unattented operation. The main electromechanical equipment will be supplied by Kossler-Iberica SA and the plant will be evaluated in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens (Dpt. of Mechanical Engineering) concerning dissemination to at least 50 registered sites in Greece.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
