DEMONSTRATION MINI-HYDRO PLANTS AT VOLTRI AND VAL NOCI AQUADUCT, GENOVA

Objective

The installation and test of two mini hydro plants at separate sites to investigate the standardisation of Vortex turbines with plastic blades for different operating heads.
Energy produced : 1340000 kWh per annum
Cost of energy produced : 21 Lit/kWh
Marginal cost saving over traditional generation 45. 6 MLit/year Payback : 4 years.
The model turbine at Voltri produced slightly lower efficiencies on test at the Institute of Hydraulics than expected, but demonstrated otherwise acceptable hydraulic characteristics. Failure of the plastic runner blades resulted in their replacement with conventional steel blades, with an associated improvement in efficiency.
The opportunities for standardisation of this turbine configuration will become known when Torre de Quezzi unit is fully tested.

This project includes two sites, at which similar vortex turbines with plastic bladed runners will be installed. The machine installed at Voltri site was tested at the Institute of Hydraulics, University of Genova to fully characterise it, and tests were continued on site. To investigate the possibility of standardising manufacture of this type of turbine for higher head sites, the second unit was installed at the downstream end of the Val Noci aquaduct, as a pressure regulator for the safe admission of water into the surge tanks holding domestic water supply. In addition to providing data, and generating electrical energy, the unit is used to regulate water which would otherwise have been dissipated in a valve.
The unit at Torre Quezzi is controlled by a microprocessor based system which is remotely supervised over the local telephone network from a control room at Gavette. Generated power is transmitted to the ENEL network at 15 kV. The Unit Cost is 21 Lit /kWh.
