Objective
Foreseen Results
Modelling of the emissions and dispersion of methane in a wind tunnel, from a torus shaped device will indicate the geographical extent to effect that methane may have in the atmospheric chemistry of the greater Black Sea area.
The proposed research can be summarized in the following objectives :
1- The concentration of volatile organosulfur compounds, nitrous oxide and methane will be measured in the water column and above the superficial sediments at selected stations along the shelf areas of the Black Sea, taking into account the numerous gas seepages. The activity of methane oxidizing, methane producing and sulfate reducing bacteria in the water column using onboard incubations with 14CH4, 35SO4-2 and 14C acetate methylamine, will also be measured. The same microbial processes will be measured in seepage areas and the upper layer of the sediments (0-30 cm) because the targeted compounds are formed by anaerobic bacteria, living in the sediments. The stable isotopic composition of sulfur (d 34S ratio) and carbon (d 13C ratio) of the targeted compounds in the water column and sediments will be measured to establish their origin and geological age. Also the methane seepages contribution to the methane flux from the sediments to the ocean atmosphere interface will be measured by measuring bubble concentration with echosounding and optical counting methods. All the above measurements and processes quantitation in the water column will establish the proportion of the targeted compounds that reach the ocean -atmosphere interface.
2- Concentration of CH4, N2O and VSCs will be measured in surface waters on a semi-continuous basis and related to the prevailing atmospheric conditions. In this way, fluxes of the above named gases from the shelf areas of the Black Sea will be estimated using existing models. These fluxes if they are repeated at different seasons and are combined with our existing limited number of measurements they will provide the contribution of the Black Sea to the global budget of N2O, CH4 and VSCs. Since we have already established that the major source areas for the gases under investigation are shelf areas, our measurements should be confined to the whole of the shelf area of the Black Sea with a middle point as reference station.
3- Methane has the highest positive flux rates (to the atmosphere) across the ocean atmosphere interface of the Black Sea shelf areas. Since its importance in tropospheric chemistry and its direct and indirect greenhouse effects are well established, the Black Sea presents a unique opportunity to model the "natural chimney effect" as far as CH4 emissions are concerned.
