Research on the electromagnetic phenomena in the industrial cells o f electrolysis made aluminum for increasing their technical and economical performances

Objective

Foreseen Results

This joint research project will achieve a large exchange of scientific results with the strict respect of the intellectual property.
Improvement of technical capabilities of Aluminium works. Advancement in understanding the complex coupled physical phenomena. Improvement of working conditions and environmental impact of plants.
The purpose of this project is to provide the old aluminum works of the CCE and NIS with a solution of improving the technical and economical characteristics, making the best of their existent material fund, so that they become competitive.
The main objectives are to bring the current efficiency and the specific consumption of electric energy to the levels achieved in the modern enterprises. The technical idea consists of the stabilization of the melted metal bath by the symmetrization of the magnetic field with respect to the vertical main planes of the symmetry of the considered cell. The device through which the symmetry is achieved is original, and it will be subject to experimental studies in the Aluminum Works of Slatina, Romania.
In order to achieve superior technical performances, multidisciplinary research activities will be done and specialists in the fundamental sciences will be contacted. The calculation of the space distribution of the magnetic field induction vector and of the current density vector constitutes a difficult problem. The study of the influence of the ferromagnetic parts from the building of the cell is a non-linear problem. The establishing of the electromagnetic forces volume distribution and the solving of the Navier-Stokes equations require the contribution of specialists in magnetohydrodynamics. The study of the thermal balance of the electrolysis cell and the preserving of a thermal equilibrium around the temperature of 960 C, the study of the physical and chemical properties of the electrolyte and the influence on the electric conductivity of the chemical composition and temperature, the automation of the electrolysis process with process microprocessors, the use of the system of data acquisition and their processing are some of the problems that are to be solved.
Apart from the main objective, other objectives have their own importance. First, the improvement of the working conditions for the workers in the electrolysis hall, by the diminution of the toxic gases concentration in the air (a consequence of the covering of the cells and of the collecting of gases), and by settling the areas of weak magnetic field (under 1500 ,uT) in which workers can work. Another objective consists of the environment protection of the areas in the proximity of large aluminum works, according to the present international standards. The research project has put the accent on maintaining the balance of nature and minimizing the damage already caused by the aluminum works.
The priority activities aim at the validation of approaches of the mathematical models underlying the design of sampling strategies and the promotion of intercomparisons to assess the performance of improved manufacturing, measurement and testing methods. Also, the priority activities aim at supporting the development of the technical criteria for accreditation of measurement and analytical laboratories conforming to EU standards.
Measurement and test play an important role in ensuring the quality and performances of manufacturing process, in protection of the environment and in improving the quality of life in terms of health and safety and protection of the environment.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
