Objective
Technologies of Geographic Information capture and analysis like satellite imagery and GIS have offered to the scientific geo-community new opportunities for research. The growing awareness of the importance of mountain areas is the reason to launch in September 2002, within the timeframe of the International Year of Mountains - the Conference on Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing in Mountain Environment Studies Environment). Its aim is to review the state-of- the-art of GIS and RS in the mountain environment research. A range of specific topics will be addressed during plenary and poster sessions. Important stream of discussion will be technology and know-how transfer to practitioners: local authorities, decision makers. Meeting of specialists from a range of disciplines and a number of countries shall promote interdisciplinary and international research initiatives.
