Identification recovery and improvement of ancient Mediterranean ceramic manufacturing technologies for the reproduction of ceramic artefacts of archaeological value

Objective

In spite of a considerable scientific literature on raw materials used and processes employed in ancient ceramic production very little attention has been paid to the testing of these results through actual experimental reproduction. This proposal focuses on the latter for five important Mediterranean ceramic categories(Attic black and red, Terra sibilate, Anabaena, Majolica, Ionic). This objective is addressed by a multidisciplinary team of (ethno) archaeologists, archaeometrists, materials scientists, technologists and craftsmen with access to all the necessary analytical and production facilities. The scientific results and actual reproductions will benefit both archaeometry and (ethno)archaeology and will lead to technological and archaeological criteria for a "museum quality" label which will revitalize the high quality ceramic artefact sector for the museum market.
