Objective
According to WHO estimations, about 3% of the world population is infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). The relative prevalence of HCV genotypes varies in different geographic regions : while genotype 1 is ubiquitous, genotype 6a is mainly restricted to South-East Asia (SEA). Knowledge on immunological cross-reactivates between relevant genotypes - which may affect vaccine efficacy - is largely lacking. We will evaluate immunological correlates of protection at the B and T cell level in genotype 1 and 6a infected patients. Special attention will be paid to immunological cross-reactivates between genotypes. If appropriate, an adjusted vaccine candidate will be developed. After evaluation of the incidence of HCV infections of the respective genotypes, clinical trial and laboratory evaluation sites will be developed in two SEA countries.
