Development of integrated pest management techniques for the control of ascochyta blight of chickpea

Objective

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) procedures based on fundamental data obtained in the project will be developed for the control of blight of chickpea caused by Ascochyta rabiei. Image analyses and their conversion to a hand-held key will be used to score symptoms, identify resistant genotypes and monitor control measures. Control measures will consist of adjustment of planting date to promote disease escape, reduction of inoculums by sanitation, seed dressings and spray programmes (designed to be least harmful to the environment), breeding for resistance (aided by genetic markers and selection for insensitivity tophytotoxins produced by the pathogen) and the amelioration of symptoms with safeness. These data will be assembled into an Integrated Pest Management system for control of blight of chickpea and disseminated to farmers by workshops and pamphlets in local languages and by publications in scientific journals.
