Objective
The reconciliation of community socio-economic needs with biophysical sustainability of semi-arid, fragile rangelands is a major challenge. This issues the focus of an INCO-DC funded, interdisciplinary, multi-country project (ERBIC18CT970162). Significant progress has been made in site-based analysis, broader eco-economic modelling, and assessing the impact of governmental/EU interventions. A Regional/International Workshop is proposed in December 2000. The objectives will be
a) to disseminate results,
b) to facilitate cross fertilisation with related projects,
c) to expand the dialogue with scientists and African policy-makers, and
d) to consider future interventions and policies. The formal output will be publications of the papers presented, the discussions and recommendations . The results will include a critical evaluation of the modelling and policy analysis and advice for SADAC countries.
