Objective
Apple and pear are priority cash crops in Asia and their production depends on sustainable control of apple/pear scab and apple mildew. This project will provide knowledge to develop integrated approaches for disease management. Effects of weather factors on pear scab will be studied in controlled environment; a forecasting model will be developed and validated by field data. Field epidemics of apple scab/mildew will be recorded to modify European forecasting models for use in Asia. Population variations of apple scab/mildew will be quantified using molecular markers and new virulence will be identified to assist in breeding cultivars with durable resistance and in deploying cultivars. Population variation of Ampelomyces quisqualis, a parasite of mildews, will be studied using molecular techniques and its interaction with mildew will be quantified. Biocontrol potential of selected isolates will be assessed.
