Objectif
An integrated management system will be developed for diseases caused by Xylella fastidiosa in citrus (Citrus variegated Chlorosis - CVC) and coffee (Coffee Leaf Scorch - CLS) based on:
(i) the use of insecticides for vector control only after possible infection periods for Xylella have been identified;
(ii) the optimum amount and ratio of N-P-K fertiliser and the avoidance of water stress;
(iii) the pruning of twigs showing initial disease symptoms. In field experiments, the temporal progress and the spatial spread of CVC and CLS will be characterised and modelled. The sharpshooter vectors of X. fastidious in coffee will be identified and the transmission of the pathogen from coffee to citrus and vice versa will be checked. The genetic diversity of the pathogen in both crops will be estimated using molecular techniques to unveil the phylogenetic relationship between the CVCand CLS strains.
