Enhancing health system quality of care in pregnancy and childbirth based on locally generated evidence and adapted interventions

Objective

We develop a health systems research methodology to identify locally appropriate and accepted strategies and interventions for improved maternity care, based on a pre-tested set of indicators for monitoring and evaluating performance and interaction of service components. Specific sets of interventions are developed jointly with health managers in 3 African study sites. Key areas are content of maternity care routines and underlying concepts, quality of care, staff motivation and performance and organisational / political prerequisites for sustainable management. Selected interventions are implemented through site-specific action plans and follow the steps: Health service analysis, priority setting and identification of appropriate interventions; implementation and evaluation; comparative analysis and documentation of research process and results. The organisational preconditions for sustainability are identified and promoted.
