Objective
The project aims to unravel the combined effects of herbivore and rainfall variability associated to El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the recruitment of trees ands shrubs in semiarid areas of Chile and Peru. The project will:
1) Reconstruct the historic role of ENSO in recruitment and growth using tree ring analyses of key species,
2) Analyse the effects of herbivore, water availability, and adult shade on seedling establishment of key tree/shrub species using controlled field experiments,
3) Develop guidelines for the regeneration of degraded woodlands and the sustainable use of semiarid ecosystems based on the opportunely use of ENSO-related rainfall and grazing control. The results will be discussed with decision-makers. This could represent an innovative approach for reforestation and forestation programs, and is in line with the priorities established in the International Convention on Desertification.
