Alternative agriculture for a sustainable rehabilitation of deteriorated volcanic soils in mexico and chile

Objective

By means of on farm research with sustainable agriculture (with principles of organic farming and agro forestry) on eroded volcanic soils in Mexico and Chile, suitable cultivation practices will be identified to prevent erosion and to rehabilitate deteriorated soils. The effects of the different cultivation techniques and agro forestry on the sustainability of the soil fertility and soil structure will be monitored. Also the situation of the rural population, including the role of the women and young people in agriculture, will be evaluated. The results of the demonstration trials will be implemented and disseminated among the local producers, associations and governmental institutions. The evolution of the cultivation techniques used by the small holders and the changes in their living conditions will be followed up to investigate the sustainability/acceptance of the measures by the local rural population.
