Objective
By a multidisciplinary approach, the present project aims at improving the resistance of coffee varieties (Coffee Arabic) to root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) which constitute the most serious constraint to coffee Cultivation in Latin America. We intend to obtain genetic durable resistance through the combined development of i) varieties (either cultivar or rootstock) associating complementary well-characterised resistance genes, and ii) optimised variety-deployment strategies based on a careful characterisation (geographical distribution, virulence and pathogenicity) of root-knot nematodes populations damaging coffee trees. In so doing, the project would significantly contribute to the sustainable improvement of coffee production, which constitutes a major economic and social activity in Latin America.
