Objective
China's accession to the WTO, its fast rising demand for animal products and continuing population growth call for major changes in its agriculture and land management policies. While trade liberalisation will ease pressures on demand, it will also trigger a rapid process of transition with diverse impacts on the various regions of China, owing to their differing social setting, ecological conditions and specialisations. CHINAGRO will conduct an informed policy dialogue between institutions in China to analyse a range of policy scenarios over the period 2001-2030 in the light of WTO commitments, and the policy needs as formulated in the Agricultural Action Plan for China's Agenda 21. The dialogue and extensive training courses will involve international experts and be organised around scenario simulations with an existing regionalised model, to be adapted and updated during the project.
