Guadua bamboo - research for sustainable management and markets of bamboo in colombia and costa rica

Objective

In many countries of the world bamboos play an important role as a renewable resource. Colombia has a long tradition of using the culms of Guadua angustifolia for constructive purposes. In recent years Costa Rica has conducted much research regarding several species of bamboo. The project will systemize the dispersed information sources on production, processing and marketing of bamboos and gather new data and experience from both countries. Research will be conducted in order to select varieties with superior properties and to improve the quality of the raw material. Emphasis is put on the socio-economic framework of bamboo production regarding its economic importance at the farm level and in marketing. The database will be made accessible to producers in order to promote sustainable production of bamboo and help create additional income for farmers.
