Workshop on coconut genetic resources management by use of a microsatellite marker kit and dedicated software

Objective

A micro satellite markers kit and dedicated software is developed as a tool for managing coconut genetic resources and germplasm collections by a consortium of CIRAD (France), IACR Long Ashton (UK), IPGRI, IPGRI/COGENT, and BUROTROP. The workshop will train 18 participants from 9 countries: Brazil, Côte d' Ivoire, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Tanzania in the use of the marker kit and application software. Nine molecular biologists and nine collection managers, in country teams of two, will get hands-on experience of identifying coconut cultivars. Training will take place at CIRAD facilities in Montpellier for 10 days in April 2002. Transfer of the technology to the producing countries where the collections are located will improve efficiency and reduce cost of conserving, characterising, managing, and utilising coconut germplasm resources for breeding improved farmers' varieties.
