DISSEMINATION OF THE TECHNOLOGY OF ABSORPTION AT VERY LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE AGRO-FOOD INDUSTRY

Objective

EMBUTlDOS Y JAMONES NOEL, S.A. intends to introduce an integral plant for producing temperatures of up - 12 deg. C using the principle of absorption and the production of electrical energy for its own use.
This project is a demonstration project of the Thermie project : INTEGRAL PLANT FOR COLD PRODUCTION AND FOR THE SELF-PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY IN THE AGRO-ALIMENTARY SECTOR by Casa Tarradellas, SA. (Contract EE./00115/89/ES/DE). The aim is to promote the technique of producing very cold temperatures via the retrieval of residual heat in a generator integrated into the same factory, to eliminate the release of hot air and CFCs into the atmosphere, to reduce the release of gases CO2, SO2 and NOx, and also to save energy, in turn reducing costs.
Through the dissemination of this project it is hoped to introduce this technology into the agro-alimentary sector.
During the month of July, 1996 we proceeded with the co-generation installation composed of two engines units which supplied the necessary thermic energy for an absorption plant in the process of construction and assembly. The results of the analyses carried out to test the working and performance of this installation were as follows :

The average values of energy generated (2000 kWh per each engine) calculated from the table above indicated are affected by a margin of error of approx. 99 kW given that the counters have a multiplicatory factor of 100. According to the results of these readings the power generated would be inferior to that guaranteed by the supplier. In order to test if this occurence was the result of the error margin of the measuring system it has been also checked the instantaneous power readings that were carried ot at the same time as the counter readings. The average values of these instantaneous power measuerments, as well the consumption of natural gas are sumarised in the following table.
As observed in the values obtained and summarised in the last table, the fuel power and consumption values of the engines units comply with the values guaranteed in the contract.

Refrigerating potential required by J. N is a 1,100 kW/h for the refrigerating, freezing and curing installations. These temperatures are obtained by mechanical compressors with a total potential of 560 kW.
The project promotes the installation of an integral plant for the production of low temperatures up to - 12 deg. C using the principles of absorption and its own production of electrical energy. The electrical/heat ratio will be balanced by total absorption of the surplus heat energy in the form of evaporation by E. y J. NOEL in the alimentary sector.
A plant will be installed to produce industrial cold using the principle of absorption which will substitute mechanical compression with heat compression in the refrigerating cycle by the use of solution called an absorber circulating through a chain of exchangers. For the system to operate an energy source is required which will give the heat necessary for the compression stage. This heat will be obtained by exploitating the residual heat from a generating plant and surplus heat energy will be absorbed by the company.
- Description of the absorption system
The working fluid leaving the condenser is released from the high pressure to the low pressure through a valve. Expansion can provide a partial vaporization of the working fluid at the temperature of the liquid leaving the condenser, in our case - 30 deg. C. The remaining liquid is vaporized in the evaporator to which is supplied an amount of energy 2140 kW. Vapour working fluid is absorbed by the weak solution, this absorption being carried out at a temperature. Heat evolved during this absorption is removed from the absorber by cooling water. The reach solution coming from the absorber is transfered from the low pressure to the high pressure due to a pump. This solution is then heated in an heat exchanger by the weak solution coming from the generator, before being introduced into the generator where the solute is separated from the rich solution. -Description of the Combined Heat and Power Plant
Cogeneration-absorption technology consists in coupling a cogeneration systems station to a cooling production system using the steam generated from the gas engine residual heat. In this way, electricity and heat requirements are covered by just one centralised installation.
The plant has a cogeneration station formed by two gas engines coupled to an alternator, generating an average of 2000 kW each one, and a steam generator which will recover the residual heat from the exhaust gases and from the refrigeration water. This pyrotubular, single step recovery steam generator generates a maximum of 4 T/h at 7 relative bar saturated steam.
For electricity generation there is a two 2500 kVA synchron alternator, coupled to the gas engine, generating a 6000 V connected to a single transformer which increases tension to grid interconnection level. The transformation output is connected to the utility grid and to the company's internal distribution system.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
