COGENERATION FOR BLAST FURNACE COAL DRYING BY GAS ENGINE ON LOW CALORIFIC OG-GAS

Objective

The aim of the project is energy saving by demonstrating a new application of a gas engine on a very low-calorific gas (8.8 MJ/m3) for coal drying in milling lines, by tuning variations of the heat demand of the different lines, by optimizing the simultaneously cogenerated electricity production, by reducing operational cost during periods of high national electricity demand (load management).

The innovative items are :
- The optimizing process of tuning the variations of heat demand as a result of changing process conditions and required output of electrical power.
This contains a control system for a gas engine, thermal oil and hot water as heat carrying media; - The use of gas engine with a very low-calorific gas as fuel (lower heating value of about 8.8 MJ/m3). In this project OG-gas of converter gas will be used.
This gas is a by-product in the steel making process in the Basic Oxygen Steel Plant. The OG-gas contains a certain amount of dust (average 3 mg/Nm3) of which 90% of the particles are smaller than 1 um.
This contains investigations in a gas engine based on OG-gas, which is able to handle the dust.
The applications of a gas engine aiming at energy conservation is the first to be used for coal drying in the iron and steel industry. The idea of using a cheap by-product like OG-gas means a boost for the economic outlook for coal drying with simultaneous cogeneration.
The application of a gas engine on a very low calorific fuel like OG-gas is new in both the energy and the steel making world.
The project includes the pre-setting of one gas engine for coal drying in the coal preparation plant at Hoogovens Ijmuiden.
The gas engine will have three tasks :
1 supply of the amount of heat required by the drying process;
2 the generation of electricity;
3 the consumption of the by-product of the steel making process, i.e. the very low-calorific OG-gas or Convertor gas. In the actual situation the required heat for the coal drying process is produced by natural gas combustion burners. The natural gas saving after the implementation of the gas engine will be approx. 225.000 GJ per annual.
The gas engine will also generate electricity : 60 mln kWh per annual.
The energy efficiency of the gas engine becomes obvious when the electrical efficiency of the extra required fuel input (76%) is compared with the electrical efficiency of a conventional power plant (40%).

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
