ENERGY SAVING ON LOW TEMPERATURE AIR BY DIRECT WATER CROSSFLOW EXCHANGER AND RESTITUTION ON INDIRECT COUNTERFLOW EXCHANGER

Objective

In drying operation in Malteries, the cost of energy reach over 40% of the final product. In this sector, many improvement have been done since the last few years, but none of them is fully satisfied independently of last innovation on dryers. The problem we are concerned with is to dry as quick as possible a grain from an initial know moisture to a desired value, with the minimal energy cost and with respect to quality constraints for the product.
The objectives of this project, based on the innovative idea to save energy by washing the exhausted saturated air and to restituate energy saving by water transfert and treatment on a pre-heating exchanger on air inlet is to reduce from about 25% energy cost within a maximum payback of 3 years investment.

The main characteristics of the project which would be installed in St. Saulves Units are the following : ACTUAL DATAS :
Grains product capacity : 55000 tons/year.
Operational times : 8600 hours/year.
Actual consumption of thermic energy : 3400 TOE/year.
Actual cost of thermic energy : 3400 KF/year.
Exhausted air temperature and moisture : 28 deg. C and 95% HR.
Inlet air temperature and moisture : 11 deg. C and 70% HR.
PROJECT DATAS :
Grains product capacity : 5500 tons/year.
Operational times : 8600 hours/year.
Previsional consumption of thermic energy : 2600 TOE/year.
Previsional cost of thermic energy : 2600 KF/year.
Exhausted air temperature and moisture : 14 deg. C and 95 % HR.
Inlet air temperature and moisture : 22 deg. C and 50% HR.
Energy power of direct exchanger : 1000 kW
Energy power of restituate unit : 1400 kW
Air flow : 260000 kgs/hour.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
