Objective
The main objective of the project is to develop the required technology in Power Electronics and Prediction Control in order to vary the induction motors speed in the power range of 0,25 MW - 5 W and voltage up to 11 kV.
This product will produce important energy savings mainly in large pumps, fans and compressors by means of eliminating throttling control and also replacing mechanical/hydraulic drives because their low efficiency and maintenance problems.
The innovative aspects to conventional cascade drives such Kraemer are: 0,995 p.u. efficiency, substantial reductions on cost, kVAR, line current, harmonics and recovery circuit size plus power factor improvement.
Average existing installations show that throttly levels are between 30 - 50 %, hence product application has a payback of 1,25 - 2 years, making feasible its application to a broad existing market.
During the test period, the energy savings obtained oscillated between 29% and 67% for different loads of the power station.
The project consists of the development and application of a novel design drive in Power Electronics and Prediction Controls, operating at both high power and voltage levels to vary the induction slip-ring motors speed in an economical manner.
Innovative aspects of project have led to both technical and economic feasibility, where conventional drives have not been able to be applied in practice because severe limitations compared to the proposed project, hence making non feasible the speed regulation on high power and voltage motors.
Kraemer system: Large circulating currents in the rotor rectifier and also kVAR, big recovery transformer and power electronics sizes. Low speed accuracy because the variable firing angle operation on recovery inverter, very low power factor with large torque oscillations and also medium efficiency.
Variable frequency drives: Actually, there are not high voltage semiconductors to operate at line voltages up to 3/6/11 kV, hence leading to complex designs with 6 years of payback.
Comparative analysis between the project an above systems for a speed range of 0.65 - 1,0 p.u.

The context of technology is mainly in inverters and dc/cc converters or choppers being applied in variable speed drives in processing control Fraction, Power Stations and a broad range of industrial applications.
Special mention to energy savings on pumps and fans operating with throttling control, where the project produces large cost reductions due to wasted energy in valves and dampers.
Many potential applications have been so far frozen, because the high prices and important drawbacks in existing drives as explained before but the novel chopper design overcomes the actual situation with high probability to enter in a broad existing captive market.
Preliminary results with a 800 H.P. prototype shown that an average of 35 % energy reduction is expected in installations operating with 25 - 40 % throttling.
