SOFTWARE PACKAGE IMPLEMENTING NOVEL OPTIMIZATION STRATEGIES APPLIED TO HIGH TECH PRODUCTS

Objective

Every aspect of the product life, from manufacturing to integration, can be investigated thanks to purpose-built simulators. By using a simulator, or a sequence of simulators it is quite easy to investigate a given design, but what happens if you want to investigate hundreds of alternatives and use the simulator as a decision tool to identify the best concept? The project SPINOSA intended to transfer simulation technology from electronic to acoustic and mechanical design. The output of this project was directed at solutions for noise and vibration reductions which, in addition to commercial benefits also have social and environmental impacts. Spinosa was concerned with the development and adaptation of software methods and products to provide computer models and simulations of prototypes - the particular application is for prototype domestic appliances (e.g. dishwashers) with reduced noise levels.

The project was based on the capability of IMEC, a leading research institute in the field of electronic component design. IMEC had created a computer tool named NORMAN/DEBORA to assist the engineer in the design task. Basically, NORMAN defines a population of concepts (thicker, thinner, longer, shorter, in Aluminium or Steel, using this or that technology) and automatically runs all required simulators before gathering the important results and displaying in a meaningful way. DEBORA, NORMAN's sister program, is then used to identify the best mix of parameters leading to the optimal concept.

NIT(also part of the LMS group) is the world leader in acoustic and vibration simulation tools and is a prime supplier of simulation tools for the transportation and appliances market. NIT has worked with IMEC to develop a product to help prototype a car or washing machine design that optimises noise reduction. With IMEC and NIT a consortium was created joining the forces of Engin Soft, an innovative Italian engineering company, Zanussi Electrolux, the well-known provider of home appliances, Thomson Multimedia, one of the major manufacturers of television sets and BOET an engineering company providing acoustic consultancy and products for large industrial projects. LMS, NIT's mother company, and the leader in vibration and acoustic measurement software was also asked to contribute. The project was successful in adapting the NORMA/DEBORA product to a new product now known as LMS OPTIMUS. It is the OPTIMUS product that has been well received in the market place.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
