Multimedia, Multi-lingual Business Information Services for SMEs of the European Textile Industry

Objective

The proposal aims at providing high-quality multimedia business information services for SMEs of the European textile industry (comprising e.g. suppliers, fabric producers, clothing manufacturers, and producers of textile machinery equipment) bringing together three European regions characterized by the textile industry. They require such information for a number of reasons: - due to the existing international and / or transeuropean production and distribution processe - relatively short product cycles (fashion-driven, season-determined), demanding fast information services - their SME structure and dominating location in less-favoured regions in Europe - an increasing importance of technical innovations (e.g. 'intelligent' textiles, computerized machinery) - the increasing need for real-time access to international Business Information to improve decision-making in a dynamic market. In the Definition phase the project will identify, assess and process information of two different categories: - Business-to-business information, in particular Directory Services: development of a prototype interactive CD-ROM product, representing a number of companies in different business areas of the textile industry. - Business-to-customer information, in form of a European Internet Textile Warehouse for SMEs (virtual factory outlet), integrating and presenting topical offers from the three partner regions. The Internet service will comprise (animated) WWW-pages for real-time data access with on-line feedback channels (order forms, e-mail contact). A compromise will have to be made between technically feasible multimedia features and applicability of the Internet solution for the users. The interactive CD-ROM product will comprise valuable Business Information required by SMEs to broaden their range of suppliers and to increase their competitiveness. Contents include e.g. detailed standardized company profiles and catalogues of products/services. The realization will use advanced multi-media features based on a number of successful realizations performed so far. The CD-ROM product also tries to repack information and to profit from the experience available from well-established print media providers. The prototype CD-ROM may be extended later-on hybrid functions (internet links) allowing permanent information update, ensuring real-time access to time-critical information (free capacities).
