Second-Hand Machinery and Capital Goods Electronic Market place

Objective

The project will develop an European virtual market place for second-hand machinery and capital goods, using Internet as a standard communication platform for all interested parties. Rationale: Due to rapid technological changes, industrial equipment and machinery stays obsolete at an ever shorter time period. Therefore companies are forced to buy new and sell their old equipment and machinery to remain competitive. At present the second hand machinery market is poorly structured and mostly based on informal contacts between suppliers and professional colleagues. Furthermore the specific needs and characteristics of second hand machinery makes this market a very specialised and complex one. Some initiatives have been undertaken for creating an electronic market place for second hand machinery. However all these initiatives are on a local or national basis, or are located in the USA and only focused on a few sectors. Objectives: The project will promote the offer and demand of second-hand machinery and capital goods of European industries at world-wide level. This will enable a cost effective and optimal use of the available production equipment, and contribute to an increased competitiveness of European companies, in particular SMEs. The content of the application will provide high quality information on existing offer and demand of used machinery at an European level. The aim is to structure and formalise the relationship between offer and demand in order to obtain an optimal match. Methodology: The scope of the project will be initially restricted to 5 industrial sectors: Machine Tools, Plastics, Textile, Food, and Wood. During the project, exploitation of other industrial sectors will be studied, and could be included after termination of the project.
