Objective
Disclosing (multi media) Geographic Information can be done in many ways. General GIS viewers exist today in the market to give experienced and non experienced users the possibility to look at data and make strategic decisions based on it. GIS Data transfer between different GIS is a key element for a wide dissemination of this data. The TOPGIS will go one step further to investigate and perform interoperability of GIS Objects. This mean a direct access of data between GIS applications from different vendors, without using GIS exchange formats. This new methodology will show the future of Open GIS applications and address the objectives of an open information society. The technologies used in TOPGIS will assist in the definition of the Open GIS specification. The TOPGIS focuses on the methods for interoperability and not on the data itself. It must be seen as the framework in which future GIS applications should run. TOPGIS mainly covers the 4th objective of Geographic Information in Info2000 namely : To demonstrate methodologies for collecting , exchanging and using pan-European or trans-border GI, including the provision for networked access to other services. TOPGIS selects the application area Business Geography to prove the concept.
