Objective
The ultimate aim of NATREP is to develop a CD-Rom based multimedia application that will be targeted at the educational sector. NATREP will give students and educators access to European Databases containing natural resource information. Combined with the necessary multimedia tools NATREP will enable the appropriate use of the information, guiding users through the complex process of turning a vast amount of data into information to be used for educational purposes. Being implemented on top of a secured information resource NATREP will contain multiple scenarios, learning sessions and interactive lessons targeted at the secondary school level and tailored to the educational system in place in each of the EU Member States. The emphasis of NATREP will concentrate on nature resources, natural processes and environmental phenomena of educational interest allowing to explore and compare the regional diversification all over Europe. Different types of MM-oriented sessions will be included : 1. Tutorial sessions describing the characteristics of the single data (read environment themes) with emphases on spatial variation and regional diversification. 2. Analysis sessions illustrating the interactions between the different data layers (read environment themes) and explaining the inter-related effects on the environment. These lessons will be illustrated by means of specific sites of European importance and local case studies. 3. Exercise sessions demonstrating the use and the potential application of the information content for the user's own locality or region. About 20 different educational sessions are envisaged, each one tailored to the educational system in place in each Member State where the product will be launched. The core information contained in the product are information inventories resulting from the European Commission's CORINE programme through the implementation of methodologies at EU Member State level. The data provision is guaranteed by the European Environment Agency and will be complemented with data originating from other European Institutions. An important amount of resources during the definition phase will be devoted to the Commercial Design. There needs to be varying approaches to the market penetration in different Member States because the school education system is differently organised both in terms of responsibilities and subject matter dealt with in the national curricula. The market penetration strategy will be crucial. Important technical issues include the elegant handling of languages, the balance between analysis simplicity and specialised information content and the perception of different education curricula as applied by the different EU Member States.
