Melts of ultramafic alkaline complexes; an experimental study of melt inclusions and synthetic compositions

Objective

At the present time the origin of ultramafic alkaline intrusive rock is unresolved, and no other group of magmatic rocks have been subjected to so many different petrogenetic models. There is also no definite view on the composition and genesis of primary carbonatites which are often found in association with silicate rocks.

The aim of this project is to combine geochemical data on a few selected representative intrusive complexes (Gardiner in East Greenland, Kovdor on Kola Peninsula, Kugda and Guli in polar Siberia) with the results of experiments with minerals and synthetic compositions to create a model of low-pressure evolution of ultramafic alkaline closed plutonic magma reservoirs.

Petrogenetic applications will be based mainly on the results of homogenization experiments with primary melt inclusions in minerals from the selected four intrusive complexes. Electron microprobe analyses of homogenized inclusions will be used for evaluation of bulk compositions of primary magmas and evolved liquids. The evolution of the melts will be also studied experimentally with synthetic glasses of similar composition. A fluorine-doped forsterite-diopside-kalsilite model system will be studied to understand the role of volatile components and micra-fractionation in the genesis of highly larnite-normative liquids.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
