Objetivo The project is aimed at establishing the electron mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of irreversible refractive index change in doped silica glasses under the action of an intense UV radiation. This phenomenon, known as 'photorefractive effect', is most pronounced in glasses with non-stoichiometric composition and finds wide use in the modern fibre-optic technology. Based on the photorefractive effect, in-fibre refractive index Bragg gratings are manufactured for applications in optical communication systems and sensors. The project contains theoretical and experimental tasks, which are closely connected and complementary, and combines scientists actively working in the fields of solid state physics and fibre optics. A distinctive feature of the research programme is that it forms a complete research cycle. It begins with preparation of highly photorefractive silica glasses using a unique plasmachemical technology and includes investigation of UV absorption and luminescence in the glasses, drawing the fibres, writing in-fibre refractive index gratings, measuring the value of the photorefractive effect, investigation of the behaviour of in-fibre gratings under gamma-radiation. The experimental results obtained will be analysed within the framework of the model of structurally non-rigid oxygen vacancy in the glass network. The mechanisms of the electron rearrangements of such defects under photoexcitation will be compared in silica glasses with different dopants. Estimations will be made of the magnitude of the electron rearrangement effects, including their effect on the dielectric permeability.
