Theoretical and experimental investigation of multibody space systems connected by hinges and tethers

Objectif

The objectives of this project are the development of theoretical and experimental methods of research in the dynamics of space systems of bodies with mechanical (hinged and tether) connections (STS) and their application to define the main practically important regular operational motions and states of such systems in orbit.
The main directions of the research activities are as following:
Creation and development of generalized mathematical models and research techniques of the steady state and transient regimes of motion of multi-body space systems with tether connections taking into account different system properties. Research of chaotic regimes and synchronisation of STS motions, various ways of attachment and deployment of the cable, elastic and damping characteristics of the system "cable - device of deployment", and of the consequences of the interaction of an electrically-conducting cable with the magnetic field of near space.
Mathematical modelling of specific modes of motion of multi-body space systems with cable connections and the development of computer codes for their numerical simulation.
Development and experimental research of main modules of multi-body space systems; analysis of the obtained results and generalization of the results of activity, preparation of a technical proposals for a full-scale space experiment.

During the research the following results are expected to be received:
developement of generalized mathematical models and techniques of research of the motion of multi-body systems with one-sided and two-sided connections having different mechanical and electrical properties and the determination of their typical behaviour;
presentation of the main features of their regular operational states under different conditions of motion of the multi-body system taking account new effects which so far have not yet been considered in their modelling;
study of main regular motions in the dynamic processes of deployment of multi-body systems with different structure and with connections having different mechanical characteristics;
development of guidelines for the choice of parameters for a stable process of deployment ;
study of stochastic regimes in the motion of tethered bodies taking account of the finite sizes of the bodies of the system;
research of the main regular motions and qualitative features for the process of the electrical interaction of a cable - tether system with external fields and the development of a technique of taking into account the influence of this interaction on the dynamics of the system;
determination of the laws to quantify the friction force in the hinges during the process of deployment of the system;
development of a technique of selection of the design parameters for different types of connections for the construction of a multi-body space systems;
development of a technique of calculation of damping decrements for different oscillation modes of the investigated systems taking into account conditions of tether attachment;
development of the algorithms for the definition of the orientation of a tether on the basis of measurements of components of the magnetic field of the Earth only;
development of ways of motion control for tethered bodies;
development of software packages for the simulation of the dynamics of a systems of bodies with connections of different types and physical properties;
development of experimental components of devices of attachment and systems of deployment;
collection of experimental data about main parameters of devices of deployment and components of attachment of tethers;
preparation of the technical proposal for the realisation of a full-scale experiment on the basis of one of the Ukrainian space vehicles.

Programme(s)
