Development of the method for computing the shapes and sizes of ice accretions on the frontal surface of an airfoil section

Objectif

Generalisation and classification of experimental data according to ice shape, heat-transfer and droplet-catching coefficients. Determination of functional dependencies.
Refinement of the methodology for computing ice shapes and sizes on the frontal airfoil surface for the potential flow conditions. Determination of their ranges of applicability.
Development of the methodology for computing ice shapes and sizes on the frontal airfoil surface with accounting for viscous effects. Determination of the ranges of their applicability.
Determination of the accuracy requirements for computing ice shapes and sizes.
The methods to be improved and developed will enable determining ice shapes and sizes on unprotected airfoils as well as in the cases where the ice-protection system functions ineffectively and ice may form beyond the heating zone (barrier ice).

The employment of the methods developed will enable:
Enhance existing model and anticipate new possible regulation evolution ( SLD) by developing new physical approach;
determining the aircraft surfaces where ice protection may not be installed thus providing a rational selection of the ice-protection for the aircraft;
significant reduction of the volume of flight testing in natural icing conditions;
raising the aircraft's competitive capacity.
