Ponderomotive acceleration of ions in planetary and astrophysical plasmas

Objective

The main goal of the project is to advance the understanding and to provide a quantitative description of acceleration mechanisms responsible for the outflow of ions from the Earth's ionosphere under the action of ultra low frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves. The project is expected to provide a first systematic presentation of the diversity of natural phenomena within the framework of the theory of ponderomotive forces. To accomplish this goal, a self-consistent theory of the ponderomotive impact of the ion-cyclotron and Alfvén waves on the multicomponent plasma flows will be developed, satellite, radar, riometer and ground-based magnetometer observations of the particles and waves will be analysed with the aim to verify the theoretical models and proposals.

Furthermore, the concept of ponderomotive forces will be used to infer the dynamics of more remote celestial plasma objects.
Activities include:
1. A derivation of the basic equations, taking into account both the ponderomotive redistribution of ions under the action of waves, and the spatial-temporal structure of the wave field which in turn depends on the distribution of ions;
2. Development of methods for solution of a set of standard problems which can be used to test forthcoming models answering the aims of the project;
3. Work on the interpretation of Viking, Freja and Cluster satellite data in context with theory of ponderomotive wave-particles interaction;
4. A study of ULF data from the ground based magnetometer networks correlating them with results of satellite and ground-based radar experiments;
5. A comparative study of ponderomotive forces in the terrestrial and celestial plasmas.

The following scientific results are expected:
1. A self-consistent system of basic equations describing the field aligned ponderomotive forces in a moving multicomponent plasma;
2. A theory for the following physical phenomena: ponderomotive acceleration of the polar wind; ponderomotive formation of filamentary plasma structures in the topside ionosphere including field aligned small-scale density cavities and plasma jets; ULF induced drag force in space plasma with anomalous resistivity; ponderomotive self-action of ULF waves. Numerical simulation of heavy ion acceleration due to the ponderomotive resonance;
3. Tests and criteria of the visible manifestations of ponderomotive forces in the Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere;
4. The variations of ponderomotive forces associated with solar cycle and magnetic disturbances (storms, substorms), and their corresponding effects on the ion outflow from the upper atmosphere/ionosphere;
5. An extrapolation of the results to the dynamics of more remote celestial plasma objects with special emphasis on the ion outflow from the atmospheres of comets and planets;
6. The final review papers describing the main results of this project.
The results will have both scientific importance and practical significance as an instrument helping to develop methods of monitoring state of the magnetosphere within the framework of such activities as Space Weather program.
