Formation and properties of spatial optical solitons in photorefractive waveguides

Objetivo

The investigation of soliton formation and interaction in photorefractive crystals is a new and fascinating topic that is actually treated in a growing number of research teams all over the world. Correspondingly, this project is focused on the preponderantly experimental study of spatial photorefractive optical solitons in planar wave-guides that should be completed by theoretical modelling. For the study of soliton behaviour a planar waveguide geometry enable in most cases advantages compared to bulk samples, e.g. higher stability of the solitons, lower power level of light, or the possibilities for direct fiber coupling of light. However, compared to bulk samples the soliton formation and interaction in waveguide structures is only hardly investigated.

The three main objectives of this project are the formation and characterisation of photorefractive waveguides in different substrate materials, the investigation of spatial solitons and their interactions, and the demonstration of different applications of these effects.

Up to now very little is known about the influence of the photorefractive properties of the waveguiding layers on the characteristics of soliton formation, on the corresponding build up times of soliton propagation and on the output of collision of two or more solitons within the waveguide. Here a more detailed study of the properties of different waveguide materials used for soliton formation is of great importance. A better understanding of the involved mechanisms together with control of the solitons' behaviour while propagating in the self-induced channel or colliding with another one may enable different applications of photorefractive solitons, e.g. beam dividers or all-optical routers.
